Just because you’re a dude does not mean you’re exempt from skincare. In fact, it should be included in your priorities. After all, good skin will take you places. Do you want to land a job that’s sure to steer your career in the best direction? A radiant skin will charm your potential employer. Want to go to The Bahamas for a honeymoon? Glowing skin will give your partner fewer reasons to say no to your marriage proposal.
Yes, it’s in your best interest to invest in your skin’s health and appearance. Here’s how.
Mind you skin type
Your skincare regimen should be informed by your skin type. There are four you should know about. Normal skin means well-balanced skin. The scientific term for it is eudermic. Dry means your skin produces less sebum than what’s needed for it to stay moisturized. Oily means there’s heightened sebum secretion, making your skin look like it’s ready for a sunny side up.
The most tricky type is the combination skin. That’s where your face has both dry and oily patches. Try mapping out those patches using the T zone. The horizontal line runs through your forehead, just above the eyebrows. The vertical line extends from the middle of your forehead down the length of your nose. If you have a combination skin type, either your cheeks are oily and your T zone dry, or the opposite.
Buy skincare products based on your skin type. The same goes for determining the frequency of whatever skincare regimen you decide to adopt.
Be wary of the sun
The sun emits harmful UV rays. It’s the main cause of skin cancer. It’s also a culprit for skin damage and premature aging. If you want to spare your skin from wrinkles, liver spots, and whatnot, never go out without applying sunscreen. Your best bet is a product with at least SPF 50.
When you dine al fresco, do not sit under the sun, even if the weather is nice. At least sit at a table under a protective awning. You will still feel the breeze without compromising your skin’s health.
Stick to a skincare routine
Once you decide to follow a skincare routine, stick to it as best as you can. Even if you go out for a night of partying and you come home a little wasted, do not skip your chosen regimen. Consistency is key. That is if you do not want to give breakouts a chance.
Wash your face with a gentle facial wash in the morning and before bedtime. Make it a habit to apply toner and moisturizer too.
Be gentle on your skin
Use your fingers to wash your skin. Follow the same circular motion. Do not rub your face like you’re trying to remove caked soil from off-road tires.
Pat dry your skin using a clean and smooth towel. Again, do not rub dry. Friction is bad for your skin’s outer layer. That is unless you’re exfoliating, which is another must-include step in your skincare regimen.
Exfoliate based on your skin type. Dry skin can make do of less frequent exfoliation compared to oily skin.
When you shave, do not go against the direction of hair growth. That can cause irritation. If you want a close shave, do so after a couple of the usual runs. Soothe your skin with aftershave.
Go the extra mile
Do you want to achieve that glass skin K-pop stars are famous for? Then add essences and serums to your skincare arsenal.
Essences come in the form of watery lotions or gels. They are packed with skin-boosting ingredients like hydraulic acid and glycerin.
Meanwhile, serums usually contain niacinamide or Vitamin C, depending on the intended effect of the product. Serums and essences are applied twice daily, in the morning and before bedtime.
Lead a healthy lifestyle
Take care of your skin from the inside out. Eat healthy meals with large portions of fruits and green vegetables. Drink lots of water too.
Never stress yourself out too much. Get at least 8 hours of sleep. If you can, cut your alcohol consumption. And quit smoking if you haven’t yet. Those vices age your skin.
You’re already pretty smart. Your face does not disappoint too. You even got muscles to boot. And your bank account’s rather steady. Now, complete the package with young and healthy skin. You’ll be surprised how it’ll further boost your self-esteem. That is even if you already fancy yourself as a suitable candidate for the next season of The Bachelor.
